Great Bear Ski Area was one of our most interesting stops we made on the tour. We pulled in and hopped out of the van expecting the cold, however we couldn’t get over how cold it really was with the wind and and all elements combined. We were real bummed due to the fact that skiing all afternoon was going to be interrupted by breaks often. Henrik was also feeling sick, and would come out for the first session but didn’t think he would make it much longer than that.
We got geared up and tickets and headed out for some laps. The full park was accessible by a 4 person chair lift that went decently fast, and a bit more then half the park could be accessed by a slow rope tow. We stuck to the chair lift to take full laps and rest on the ride up. They had a bunch of cool features like an oversized picnic table and 2 c boxes and much more and it was a bummer when we needed a break from the cold.
We went inside to hang out with the small crew who consisted as much of Great Bear employees as it did crew who showed up to ski with us. It was great though, everyone was hyped to have us and were stoked just to chill with us. We were bought beers and whatever we needed from the resort, thanks to Dan and the rest of the staff for that. We hung out for a bit while signing posters and whatever else the crew had to get signed.
The most interesting part came when instead of going skiing again we got talked into going out on some Zipfy sleds. These things are awesome! They let everyone in the crew grab up a sled and head up the chairlift to take some runs with us. These sleds you can steer and go real fast on, so cruising down the groomer was so fun! We stayed out on these for a few laps until we were freezing. Some kids were taking them through the park, others bombing the front face. It was a good laugh and a fun change to skiing park all night!
After that we came back in for more hang out with the locals, we got some special smoothies set up, as well as bacon wrapped corn-dogs. We hung out chatted, and joked around until it was time for us to get a start on a 6 hour drive towards Terry Peak on the western side of SD. We said our good byes and thank you’s, then hit the road!
Thanks a lot to everyone at Great Bear Ski Area! We had a blast! Thanks to Dan, and everyone else who works at Great Bear that chilled with us, we truly enjoyed everyones company. Thanks to the locals who came out to ski and ride sleds with us also! Such a fun night! THANKS!
